Fathers held a peace conference
Religious fathers of different denominations held a peace conference in Addis Ababa to deliberate on various issues which have a bearing on peace.
In the one-day long conference held on 26 September 2007, terror, civil war, displacement, poverty and HIV were pinpointed by the Ethiopian patriarch, Abune Paulos, as the most serious challenges this world is facing.
As long as such problems are not alievated, we could not have a stable world, His Holiness has said. He has called upon attendants of the meeting to regularly meet and try to find out solutions for the problems.
The attendants have requested lenders to write off the debt of poor countries. They have also emphasized the need to increase developmental assistance qualitatively and quantitatively.
The attending fathers have also expressed their happiness in seeing such a conference which participated different denominations. Thanks are due to the Ethiopian Orthodox church which organised the conference on the occassion of the Millennium celebration, the fathers said.
In a press conference held on the morrow by Syrian, Indian, Coptic, Russian and Eastern orthodox representatives, it was emphasized that the rich experience is available in Ethiopia in social, religious, political and economic areas. This, as the representatives said, is instrumental in the fight Africa shall wage against poverty.
The fathers have also participated in the Bonefire ceremony to mark the finding of the True cross.
Holy Sites Development and Support
Section Faces Financial Shortage
The Holy Sites Development and Support Section, Mahbere Kidusan, which provides short-term assistance for churches, monasteries, nunneries, church schools, scholars and diciples has faced a chronic financial Shortage, the head says. According to W/ro Alemtsehay Meseret, the shortage is a result of price hike of materials and inability to find sponsors who cover projects fully. In addition, delay of started projects has also worsened the shortage due to the rise in market price of the inputs needed, Alemtsehay says.
Of the 356,336.62 Birr needed to complete the nine projects, only 193,462.26 Birr is secured by now. As Alemtsehay put it, a total of 568,082.26 Birr is needed for the seven projects to be launched this year. Of the 353,000 Birr needed for church schools, only 126, 155.90 Birr is obtained so far, the head indicated.
According to Alemtsehay, this chronic shortage will be solved only by the positive responses of the faithful. She has called upon all to take the matter seriously and play their part in solving the bottleneck.
